Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last set of teeth to develop in your mouth. If you're in your late teens or early 20s some of your mates might have also recently had their wisdom teeth removed as it is a common procedure at this age.
While not everyone experiences issues with their wisdom teeth, it is not uncommon for problems to arise as these teeth begin to emerge. So no matter if you're 18 or 68, wisdom teeth issues can occur at any age.
Teenage Years
Wisdom teeth typically begin to emerge between the ages of 17 and 25, with most people having four wisdom teeth. During this time, the jawbone is still developing, which can result in issues such as overcrowding, impacted teeth, and infection. In some cases, wisdom teeth may grow in at an angle or fail to emerge fully, causing pain and discomfort.
Early Adulthood
By the time you reach your early 20s, your wisdom teeth should have fully emerged, assuming they are not impacted or growing in at an angle. At this stage, wisdom teeth issues can include decay, infection, and gum disease. If left untreated, these issues can spread to other teeth and cause more serious problems.
Middle Age
If you're in your middle age, typically around 40-60 years old, your wisdom teeth have been in your mouth for several decades. At this stage, wisdom teeth issues can include decay, gum disease, and bone loss. Additionally, wisdom teeth may begin to shift, causing crowding and discomfort. If these issues become severe, wisdom teeth extraction may be necessary.
Mature Age
By the time you reach mature age, typically over 60 years old, your wisdom teeth have been in your mouth for several decades, and most likely will have caused issues at some point. At this stage, wisdom teeth issues can include decay, gum disease, and bone loss, as well as an increased risk of oral cancer. Additionally, wisdom teeth may begin to cause discomfort or pain, which can impact your quality of life.
Wisdom teeth issues can occur at any age, from teenage years to mature age.
