Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure, but one of the most frequent questions patients ask is: How long will recovery take? While everyone heals a little differently, most people recover comfortably within one to two weeks.
Here is what you can expect during each stage of recovery, plus tips to help you heal faster.
The first 24 hours
The first day after surgery is when swelling and mild discomfort are most common. You may experience some bleeding, tightness in the jaw, and grogginess if sedation was used. Rest, keep your head elevated, apply ice packs, and stick to soft foods like yoghurt, soup, or smoothies.
Days 2 to 4
Swelling usually peaks around day two or three, then gradually begins to settle. You may notice slight bruising or jaw stiffness. Continue gentle oral hygiene, avoid strenuous activity, and take any prescribed medication as directed.
Days 5 to 7
Most patients feel significantly better by the end of the first week. Swelling continues to reduce, chewing becomes more comfortable, and daily routines can slowly resume. Avoid smoking, drinking through straws, or hard foods that may disrupt healing.
Weeks 2 and beyond
By two weeks, the extraction sites are typically healing well. Any remaining tenderness is usually mild. If stitches were placed, they may dissolve on their own or be removed during a follow-up visit.
Tips for a smoother recovery
Here are some simple tips to help make for a successful recovery:
• Rest as much as possible
• Keep the area clean and follow aftercare instructions
• Stick to soft foods and stay hydrated
• Avoid smoking or alcohol while healing
• Contact your dentist if pain, swelling, or fever worsens
Wisdom teeth recovery is generally straightforward when aftercare instructions are followed. If you have concerns about healing or upcoming surgery, our team is here to guide you through every step.
